ForSponder is configured via a text file called ACCOUNTS.TXT. ACCOUNTS.TXT serves 2 purposes

· determine the ForSpond interval
· define the list of EMail accounts to monitor.

Blank lines and lines beginning with ; are ignored.

The line, "interval=n" is used to specify the ForSpond interval. The list of EMail accounts will be checked every n minutes. The interval line can be placed anywhere in the ACCOUNTS.TXT file.

All other lines in the file correspond to an EMail account that you want to monitor.

ACCOUNTS.TXT is formatted as follows:
POP3 Host, POP3 port, POP3 Username, POP3 password, Delete EMail, Response File, SMTP Host, SMTP Port, Forwarding Address, Forwarding Address,
...

POP3 Host = This is the URL of the POP3 server. This is usually the part of the email address after the @. The POP3 server is the location of the EMail address that you want to monitor.

POP3 Port = The port of the POP3 server. When in doubt, use 110.

POP3 Username = This is the part of the Email address you want to monitor before the @ character.

POP3 password = Your password used to log in to the POP3 server.

Delete EMail
= This will allow you to either delete the EMail from the POP3 Server or leave it on the server after it has been forwarded.
1 = Delete EMail after forward
0 = Leave EMail on the server

Response File = Auto Response file name. This is the name of the text file that will be sent as the reply for every EMail sent.

SMTP Host = The URL of the SMTP server you use to send mail.

SMTP Port = The port of the SMTP server. When in doubt, use 25.

Forwarding Address = A list of valid EMail addresses to forward the EMail. Each address should be separated by a comma and contain no spaces.

Here is an example line if you would like to check foo@mindspring.com and forward any mail sent to bar@msn.com and your pager.

mindspring.com,110,foo,password,1,AUTO.TXT,mail.mindspring.com,25,bar@msn.com,1234567890@verizon.com

FAQ

Q. Why did you not include an interface to configure ForSponder?
A. Forsponder is one of those programs, that one it is running, you will rarely mess with. An interface would have consumed system resources needlessly. Also, it is quite easy to set up using a simple text editor.

Q. How are EMail attachments handled?
A. Forsponder will save the EMail attachment to it's program directory while it is forwarding the EMail. ForSponder will send the attachment(s) with the forwarded EMail. After the EMail is forwarded, the attachments are deleted.

Q. I am getting errors or Forsponder is hanging when trying to connect to an EMail server. What should I do?
A. Every time EMail accounts are checked, ForSponder will create 2 text files: POP3LOG.TXT and SMTPLOG.TXT. These text files log the entire dialog between ForSponder and the EMail servers. Use these files to help diagnose where your error is.
